The most interesting thing about Graves' book to me was how absurd the behaviour of the officer was during the war. They were totally conceded with appearance and behavior as opposed to efficiency in battle. There was also a seemingly ridiculous feeling about sacrificing the lives of merger soldiers.
I guess what I'm curious is how this appearance of war vs. the reality of war is comparable to our modern society. I obviously don't think many generals or defense secrateries are as vain and concerned with propriety as they are in Graves' book, but how does the public appearance of war differ from what we really see? Does the internet age allow for a greater understanding of the battlefield?; or are we merely being misled at a more complex level? How do we understand the dirty aspects of war as it happens now?
